Why is my internet slow?

The cause is usually one of four things: Wi-Fi, your router, your internet provider, or DNS. Finding which one it is comes first.

First, separate Wi-Fi from internet service

Run one speed test close to the router and another in the room where the connection is poor. If it is good near the router and weak farther away, the issue is Wi-Fi signal rather than your provider.

If it is slow in both places, try a wired connection if you can. Slow speeds over Ethernet point to the router or your service plan.

Common causes

Weak signal: distance, walls, mirrors, and appliances such as microwave ovens can weaken Wi-Fi.

A crowded network: too many devices in use at once, or neighboring networks sharing the same Wi-Fi channel.

A troubled router: it may be overheating, outdated, or overdue for a restart.

Slow DNS: websites take a long time to begin opening even when speeds look good.

Your provider: an outage in your area or a plan that no longer meets your needs.

What to do now

Restart the router: unplug it for 30 seconds. Move closer and test again. Disconnect devices you are not using.

If that changes nothing, write down your test results and contact your provider. Those numbers help support narrow down the issue.
